Mount Faber has splendid views and a restaurant that matches the vista. By Rai Vikhnod

Elevation has a proportional affect on one’s appetite. Something about altitude ups your food intake. Especially if you’ve hiked up a distance.

Used to be that Mount Faber was for the exercise fanatics. But since developments in the neighbourhood, the little hill with grand ambitions has become a tourist hotspot. It’s got views of the port and water on one side and the creeping concrete jungle on the other. The narrow road that winds up the 100 metres is steep and leaves you breathless. When you do huff and puff your way to the top, you’re hit with another whammy. The view is breathtaking.

As you stagger along, relief looms in the sight of the cable car tower that could whisk you down to HarbourFront without wearing out anymore of your shoes or your energy levels. But meander along a bit further and you come upon solace for your energy in the form of Spuds & Aprons, a combination of air-conditioned and al fresco dining spaces with grand, sweeping views, lovely timber architecture and a menu that pleases the tourist and local palates alike.

Mount Fab
Admittedly this is a bit of a forgotten spot. The thought of going up the hill dissuades many, though you can hop aboard the cable car from HarbourFront and float over in 15 minutes.

The fare consists of combinations of cultures, pretty much like what you would see in terms of the make up of the clientele.

From Crab Linguini with a chili crab sauce to Tobiko Crusted Cod Fillet and Beef Guiness or a straightforward Carbonara, you can select from hearty, tasty fare that complement the views. There are local specials like Hokkien Noodles, Laksa and Fried Rice that will keep those winging over for a quick bite for lunch or dinner more than satisfied.

The drinks are designed to whet your appetite, while the dessert includes an audacious chempedak bread and butter pudding, which is rich with the local fruit’s flavour and topped by a generous scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Really, after that, you have no excuse not to waddle down the hill.
