THERE could well be a fight for supremacy in the BMW garage.

With the launch of its 640i xDrive Gran Turismo M Sport (quite a mouthful) the 7 Series might see some competition for a set of wheels that will do the boss with a creative vein some respect.

This bulked-up 6 Series takes on a more forceful appearance in its GT iteration. The slope of the roof and the sculpted lines are all purposeful in presenting a sense of raciness, while the comfort levels and consideration for ride quality are outstanding.

Here’s a high-powered car that has presence and a demeanour that appears aggressive but is controlled in every way.

Creature Comforts

The 6 Series GT is the same size as the 7 Series and has all the bells and whistles of the sedan. Slide into the driver’s seat and you are warmly embraced by the fine construction of what could be your favourite armchair. What it lacks in massage functions that the 7 Series has, it makes up for in comfort.

BMW may want to consider offering these seats for those who might want it at home.

Rich In Features

The full slate of onboard features is within reach. From gesture control to the fine Harman Kardon sound system, it is also equipped with safety features galore. Collision warning, lane departure warning (which gives the steering a good yank should you stray), side collision warning (useful since the length of the car seems to be a good place for silly motorcyclists to ride alongside without being seen), and your standard features are on the alert for your welfare.

There’s parking assistance, made simpler to execute, for those who are parallel parking challenged but still insist on driving a big car.

The air suspension creates a magic carpet ride that is both comfortable and easy to handle. Built for long distance drives, the steering is lighter, but stiffens noticably when the drive mode is switched to Sport. But the ride is still unflappably smooth and it negotiates curves faultlessly.

The increased use of aluminium and improved aerodynamic properties (there’s a wee spoiler that pops up at 120kmh or at the push of a button) are important in providing a good balance between power and poise.
