Skoda Superb

SKODA continues to win new customers with an accomplished showing. The Czech car maker, in conjunction with Volkswagen, has rolled out some winning cars that hit the right spots in terms of looks, form and price.

While the model names hark back to an earlier time, what’s beneath the hood has kept pace with current technology as part of the Volkswagen family.

But it’s important to bear in mind that when you hear “Superb” it’s not an adjective. Though, in many respects, for its price, it is a highly recommended choice.

The big plus for the Superb is the amount of space on offer. There is ample legroom in the front and back. And a huge boot with clever movable restrainers that keep things from rolling around in the large space.

The inclusion of a torchlight in the boot is a good touch that also reflects on the practical considerations that have been thoughtfully included in the Superb.

Styled to fit in with the European competition, the Superb presents a smart outline.

The Laurin + Klement kit that’s been slapped on for an additional $20K includes a special brown exterior colour,  unique rims, an enhanced Canton sound system and badging on various parts of the car.

Creating The Right Ambience

While there are some issues getting ApplePlay to behave, the general sound quality of the boosted sound system in the larger cabin is rich. Other creature comforts like the comfortable seats — with cooling in the front — add to the sense of space.

The 2L engine is smooth on the run, but the drive moods are curiously curated. In Normal it’s floaty and in Sport the harsh engine sound is straining. The ideal setting is in Comfort, which seems to cut back on the floaty ride and allows all the refined elements to come together nicely.

But it does have pace and the TDI engine delivers without labouring or running out of breath.

Handling is generally easy and while you don’t get much feedback from the road, you know the car will do what’s asked of it. Aided with the technology on board, that should earn it some brownie points.
